(bapt. Vienna, 22 May 1694; d. St Pölten, 16 Apr. 1757). One of the leading Austrian fresco painters of his period. In 1719–23 he visited Italy, where he studied with Solimena amongst others, and his work has something of Solimena's classical dignity and firmness of construction, eschewing the more extravagant effects typical of Baroque decorative painting. His masterpiece is the decoration of the dome (1726–30) of the grand hall of the Hofbibliothek (now Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library)), Vienna; the frescos glorify the Emperor Charles VI, the founder of the library.
