Is a technique designed to limit bias in the appraisal process (see halo effect) by having the appraisal undertaken by the employee's line manager's manager, rather than the line manager him- or herself. It also helps to ensure consistency, although the problem is that it burdens the more senior manager with a greater amount of work. The less sexist term ‘grandparent’ appraisal is preferred in some organizations.
