This monastic order was founded by the hermit St Stephen (c. 1054–1124) of Muret, near Limoges. It was an ascetic community of choir and lay brothers which, after Stephen's death, established itself at Grandmont and followed a strict version of the Benedictine rule. Three small priories were founded in England but only one of these (Grosmont, Yorks.) survived till the dissolution.
