Quick Reference

Gram is an alternative name for the chickpea, now little used except in the expression gram flour, a flour made from chickpeas and used particularly in India and the Middle East. The word was borrowed in the eighteenth century from Portuguese grāo (then often spelled gram), a descendant of Latin grānum, ‘grain, seed’.
