Highly vascularized fibrous connective tissue that replaces the initial fibrin clot in a wound. Endothelial cells from adjacent capillaries invade to produce the vasculature and fibroblasts within the granulation tissue will gradually synthesize extracellular matrix. There are usually many phagocytes present, particularly in the early stages of repair.
