Municipal architect to several Netherlandish towns, including The Hague, Leiden, and Middelburg, he was a leading Classicist and disciple of van Campen. His best work is in Leiden, including the Bibliotheca Thysiana (1655), Laeckenhalle (1639–40), and octagonal Marekerk (1639–49—with Ionic columns carrying the dome). He completed the Oostkerk, Middelburg (1646—a variation on the Marekerk), and designed the Sebastians-doelen, The Hague (1636).
