(Italian, ‘grace’)

A quality in art which, in Italian Renaissance theory, was originally synonymous with beauty. However, the artist and writer Giorgio Vasari, author of the Lives of the Artists (1568), equated it with sweetness and softness and identified it as a separate attribute, dependent on judgement and the eye. For Vasari, the High Renaissance artist Raphael was the embodiment of grace.
