(1816–75), MP for Kilkenny city 1865–75, a proprietor of the Freeman's Journal from 1841, and a highly influential politician. A Mayoborn Protestant with a medical degree from Glasgow, he campaigned for repeal in the 1840s, and subsequently for tenant right and disestablishment, contributing significantly to the achievement of the latter. As a member of Dublin city council from 1852 he advanced various projects of municipal improvement, for one of which—the Vartry water supply scheme—he was knighted in 1863.
