(1628–83), faith healer, ‘the Irish stroker’. The heir to a small property in Affane, Co. Waterford, Greatrakes served under Orrery in the Cromwellian army. His apparent power of healing by touch, first reported in 1662, provoked much debate in scientific circles, particularly during and after a visit to England in 1666.
