Born in South Africa, he became a citizen of the USA in 1973. His confident rejection of Modernism led him to a re-appraisal of Classicism, of which he has been one of the most distinguished practitioners. His News Building, Athens, Ga. (1992), has an unfluted Greek Doric portico, and an overall authority worthy of earlier Neo-Classicists. Among his other works are a farmhouse in CT (1979–83), offices for Brent publications, NYC (1985), and several interiors for the US Department of State, Washington, DC (1984–7).
