green flash

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

An optical effect, seen under favourable conditions at the moment of sunset or sunrise, in which the small uppermost fraction of the Sun's visible disk briefly appears intensely green as a result of the preferential refraction of light. The green flash is quite rare, requiring a flat clear horizon for visibility, perhaps coupled with special atmospheric conditions; a sea horizon is considered ideal.
