(b Orchardleigh, nr. Frome, Somerset, 14 July 1642; d London, 19 May 1676). English portrait painter. He was Lely's outstanding pupil and ‘one of the few British-born painters of this age who showed real promise’ (Ellis Waterhouse), but he led a dissipated life and died young. There are several examples of his work, including a self-portrait, in Dulwich Picture Gallery, London.
