(1814–62) Confederate army officer and leader of South Carolina's first infantry regiment, born in Columbia, South Carolina. Gregg later commanded a brigade that acquitted itself admirably at the battles of Gaines' Mill, Second Bull Run, and Fredericksburg (all 1862), where he was mortally wounded.
