(1836–89) Born in Bury St Edmunds; author and political journalist among whose novels Across the Zodiac: The Story of a Wrecked Record (1880) was one of the first novels to imagine a voyage to another planet by means of a spaceship. Its antigravity propulsion may have influenced H. G. Wells's ‘cavorite’. The Mars reached by the spaceship is an ambiguous utopia, scientifically advanced, but socially menacing. Interleaves (1875) is a book of poetry: other poetry collections were published as by Lionel H. Holdreth.
