(1828–64) Confederate army officer with a Texas infantry unit, born in Lawrence County, Alabama. Gregg fought and was captured at Fort Donelson (1862), served with distinction during the Vicksburg campaign (1862–63), was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga (1863), and led his command with distinction through battles of the Wilderness to Petersburg campaign (1863) before being killed in action outside Richmond. Prior to the war Gregg had been active in state legal and political circles as a proponent of secession, and he was a member of the Texas delegation to the Provisional Confederate Congress.
