A secreted glycoprotein (184 aa) that binds and antagonizes the actions of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP)-2, -4, and -7. It opposes BMP effects on osteoblastic differentiation and function in vitro. A related protein, gremlin 2 (protein related to Dan and cerberus, PRDC, 168 aa) has been identified. Other BMP antagonists are noggin, sclerostin, and chordin.
