The almost hallucinogenic state a computer user is in when staring at the grey bar display that accompanies long computer processes such as downloading a very large Web page. It is occasionally used in day-to-day speech to indicate that someone is not paying full attention to something. For example, ‘he didn't respond to my suggestion. I think he was in grey bar land.’
