Quick Reference

A rare inherited disorder in which platelets have few or no α-granules and platelet-specific α-granule proteins. The defect is apparently megakaryocyte-specific since Weibel–Palade bodies in endothelial cells, which have the same contents (von Willebrand factor and P-selectin) as α-granules, are normal. Mutations in the X-linked transcription factor GATA-1 cause an abnormal platelet morphology which is similar but distinct.
