Quick Reference

The network of points used to represent the atmosphere or oceans in numerical weather prediction or general circulation models, and generally taken at numerous atmospheric levels. For weather forecasting, typical grid resolutions are c.120 km and c.60 km for global models, and c.30 km for regional models. For certain studies, use may be made of a nested-grid model, in which an outer coarse grid surrounds a finer grid over the area of specific interest. Similarly, use may be made of a fine-mesh floating-grid model, in which the grid moves with the system under investigation.
