Quick Reference

A stage, usually in a boat-builders' yard on the water's edge, formed by cross beams, which is above water at low tide. Flat-bottomed vessels, particularly barges and the like, are floated over it at high water and secured. As the tide recedes the vessel rests on the grid where, at low water, its bottom is exposed for repairs or cleaning.
