Quick Reference

Methods of helping a weight-lifter grip a bar more firmly. They include using powdered chalk, gloves, and training straps. Most competitive weight-lifters prefer chalk, which helps to prevent the bar from slipping and, unlike gloves, enables the lifter to retain direct contact with the bar. Gloves have the advantage of preventing calluses from forming. Training straps are made from cotton webbing wrapped around the lifter's hands and bar. They make it easier for lifters to retain a grip on the bar and to perform a few more repetitions when they are beginning to tire.
