English Renaissance scholar. He studied Greek and Latin in Florence from 1488 to 1490/91, when he returned to Oxford to give the first public lectures in Greek. His learning was much admired, and he had a remarkable collection of Greek MSS. He used to be thought conservative in his religious views, but the evidence is inconclusive.
