The number of female babies born per thousand women of reproductive age. The net reproduction rate also takes into account the number of women who cannot or do not wish to have children; in western Europe, the cohort net reproduction rate is roughly 0.9 children per woman (Goldstein et al. (2003) Pop. & Dev. Rev. 29, 4), and by 2000 the Chinese net reproduction rate had fallen to 0.82 (Young (2005) Geog. J. 171, 1).
