1. The total weight of a package including its contents and the packing. The net weight is the weight of the contents only, i.e. after deducting the weight of the packing (often called the tare).
2. The total weight of a vehicle (road or rail) and the goods it is carrying, as shown by a weighbridge. The net weight is obtained by deducting the tare of the vehicle.
