Quick Reference

The Armed Islamic Group (GIA) was formed in the early 1980s to challenge the socialist and secular policies of Algeria's ruling elites. Following the military coup d'etat of January 1992, which put a halt to the parliamentary election of an Islamist party (Islamic Salvation Front or FIS), the GIA went underground, from where it launched a terror campaign involving the killing of thousands of Algerian officials and ordinary citizens, including foreigners. Some of this terrorism has been exported abroad, especially to France, where nearly a million Algerians live.
