British dance historian. A solicitor by profession, he became one of the leading authorities on 18th- and 19th-century dance and author of many books on dance. A list of his titles includes The Ballet of the Second Empire 1858–70 (London, 1953), The Romantic Ballet in England (London, 1954), The Ballet of the Second Empire 1847–1858 (London, 1955), Adeline Genée (London, 1958), The Alhambra Ballet (New York, 1959), The Dancer's Heritage (London, 1960), The Empire Ballet (London, 1962), The Romantic Ballet in Paris (London, 1966, revised 2008), Two Coppélias (London, 1970), Fanny Elssler (London, 1970), Le Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris (Paris, 1976, London 2006), Gautier on Dance (1986), The Ballet of the Enlightenment (London, 1996), and The Divine Virginia: A Biography of Virginia Zucchi (London, 2008). Also author of Adventures of a Ballet Historian: An Unfinished Memoir (1982). He discovered Hérold's original score for La Fille mal gardée.
