Steroid isolated from the sap of the Indian tree Commiphora mukul that has a hypocholesterolaemic action. It is an antagonist of the bile acid receptor that responds to bile acids by reducing their synthesis, and so acts to increase cholesterol clearance by bile acid synthesis. A lipid extract from the sap is known as gugulipid.
