A professionally trained person, skilled in identifying available options and suggesting to young people the range of potential occupations and career opportunities open to them. The aim is to find the best fit between these and the student's scholastic performance, aptitude, and interests. Guidance counselors may be teachers or other members of staff of a school or higher education setting, or of a large organization that has a diverse workforce. Guidance counselors may have a role in the detection of social and emotional problems among adolescents, although they are not formally trained for this and not appropriately compensated.
