A formal statement about a recommended defined policy, function, or activity. Examples include guidelines for screening procedures, the clinical preventive services guidelines, and for the ethical conduct of practice and research in occupational health, epidemiology, etc., and clinical practice guidelines. There may be sanctions against those who violate the guidelines, but generally guidelines are more loosely structured than codes of conduct and seldom strictly enforced.
