1. A name originally applied to small RNA molecules (60–80 nucleotides) involved in RNA editing within the mitochondria of kinetoplastid organisms and found in the editosome.

2. A more generic use of the term is for any RNA sequence involved in sequence-specific recognition of target RNA (see RNA interference).
