Portuguese architect, trained in South Africa. He was responsible for much work in Mozambique and Angola (1949–75), influenced by many sources, including works by Le Corbusier, Gaudí, Kahn, and African art. His buildings include the Smiling Lion Apartments, Maputo (1956–8), the Prometheus Apartments (1951–3), Tonelli Condominiums (1954–7), and the Church of the Sagrada Familia, Machava (1962–4), all in Lourenço Marques. His later work includes the Cohen House, Forest Town, Johannesburg (1987), and the Guedes House, Calhandriz, Portugal (1993).
