Brazilian architect. Critical of the stranglehold of Le Corbusier's dogmas in Brazil ever since the late 1930s, he advocated an architecture that was more attuned to climatic and economic realities in his plan for the new town of Caraíba (from 1976) which drew on traditional urban models and a study of vehicle and pedestrian circulation-patterns. His own house at São Paulo (1974) has a series of crisp planes and an elegantly minimal structure. Later work included the State Primary and High School, Jandira, São Paulo (1991), the Botanical Gardens Pavilions, Rio de Janeiro (1993), and the Mesquita House, São Paulo (1994).
