(bapt. Bath, 21 Mar. 1819; d Nelson, 1 Nov. 1888). British-born painter who settled in New Zealand in 1852 and became one of the country's most successful painters. He specialized in grandiose scenes of natural beauty, including lake and mountain views, and earned the flattering nickname of the ‘New Zealand Turner’.
