[T. B. Gunning (1813–89), American dentist] n. A solid metal splint linking the mandible and maxilla together to provide fixation for a fractured mandible. A splint is provided for each jaw separately and wired into place. The two splints are then wired together producing a rigid fixation. In edentulous patients the individual dentures can be used as splints.
