(b Altmannstein, Bavaria, 22 Nov. 1725; d Munich, 26 June 1775).

German sculptor. After a varied training culminating in several months at the Vienna Academy, he settled in Munich in 1754. He was one of the great woodcarvers of his age (occasionally he worked in other materials), combining an elegant Rococo style with a highly emotional religious feeling. In 1759–62 he produced his chief work, the almost entire furnishing of the church at Rott-am-Inn.
