The name given to a religious establishment or school following the Brahmanical tradition of celibate studentship in a teacher's (guru's) household. The Ārya Samāj attempted to revive this tradition in schools (which it called ‘gurukulas’) for children and students of both sexes, between the ages of four and twenty.
