GW bodies

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Small, generally spherical, cytoplasmic domains that contain proteins such as GW182 and argonaute 1 and 2 that are involved in mRNA degradation, translational repression, mRNA surveillance, and RNA-mediated gene silencing, together with their mRNA targets. The number and size of the bodies varies in various mammalian cell types. GW182 is an RNA-binding protein (1962 aa) that was originally identified as the target of an autoantibody in serum from a patient with a sensory ataxic polyneuropathy.
