(1822–87), was one of the founders of science in New Zealand. He studied at Cologne and Bonn, travelled extensively in Europe, worked in the book trade in Frankfurt and travelled to New Zealand in 1858, where he met Ferdinand von Hochstetter, the beginning of a life long friendship.
