Pope from 1522. He was tutor to the future Charles V and from 1516 the virtual ruler of Spain. As Pope his main aims were to reform the Curia, reconcile the European princes, check the spread of Protestantism, and deliver Europe from the menace of the Turks. His efforts at reform were frustrated and Rhodes fell in Oct. 1522.
