The accumulation of blood from the lungs into the pleural cavity. A massive haemothorax (i.e. accumulation of more than 1300 ml of blood in the pleural cavity) is exceedingly uncommon, but it does sometimes occur in athletes who have sustained a severe blunt trauma.
