(1829–98) Confederate army officer, born in Barnwell County, South Carolina. Hagood took part in the attack on Fort Sumter (1861) and also saw action at First Bull Run (1861). At the siege of Petersburg (1864), he commanded a section of trenches that saw heavy losses. After the war he was elected to the state legislature and served a single term as governor.
