Son of the Grand Ayatollah Muhsen al-Hakim (d. 1970) and close associate of Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Sadr (d. 1980). Since the 1970s, a key opposition figure advocating the establishment of an Islamic state in Iraq. Currently chairman of the Tehran-based Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI).
