English astronomer and mathematician who made numerous contributions to various fields of the natural sciences. His meteorological and geophysical work includes the publication of the first chart showing the global wind circulation (1686), and a map of magnetic deviation (1701), which with its isogonic lines was the first widely circulated chart to make use of isolines.
