A family of archaebacteria which can grow only in the presence of high concentrations of salt (sodium chloride). Cells are spherical, rod-shaped, or discoid. They are predominantly chemo-organotrophic. There are 2 genera, found in most saline environments: the sea, salt lakes, salted foods, etc.
