Founder of Hamalli Sufi order. Born in Mali. Lived a secluded life spent in meditation with a few selected students. Widely known for asceticism and mysticism but not scholarship. Preached pacifism and social and religious reform. Led civil disturbances against the French, making him a symbol for Muslims opposed to French rule. Arrested and exiled.
