(1816–65), Southwestern frontier humorist, who embroidered his adventures with typical frontier anecdotes, dialect, and tall tales and published them as A Stray Yankee in Texas (1853), The Wonderful Adventures of Captain Priest (1855), and Piney Woods Tavern, or Sam Slick in Texas (1858). He used the pseudonym Philip Paxton.
