Other works include The Little Magazines (1976); a life of R. Lowell (1983); and In Search of J. D. Salinger (1988), a compelling account of the difficulties he encountered in writing about his elusive subject, which he described as ‘a kind of Quest for Corvo’, with Salinger as quarry'. This investigation lead to Keepers of the Flame: Literary Estates and the Rise of Biography (1992). He edited the New Review (1974–9) and The Oxford Companion to Twentieth Century Poetry in English (1994). Walking Possession (1994) collects essays and reviews from 1968 to 1993.
