Quick Reference

(Jap.). In Japanese esoteric (see esoteric Buddhism) and martial arts practice, this refers to a spot in the human body about 3 inches below the navel in the middle of the abdomen. This place serves as the centre of gravity in martial arts and a place where the subtle energy of the body (ch'i) is collected and transformed in a manner metaphorically described as an alchemical process whereby cinnabar is heated and made into an elixir of immortality. For this reason, it is also called the ‘tanden’, or ‘cinnabar field’.
