Japanese architect. His spectacular buildings, including the Yamato International Building, Ota-ku, Tokyo (1985–6), the Umeda Sky Building, Osaka (1988–93), and the Kyoto JR Station, Shimogyo, Kyoto (1991–7), demonstrate his skills in handling enormous structures based on sophisticated technologies. They have influenced younger architects.
