Islamic Unity Movement. Militant Sunni movement that emerged in Tripoli, Lebanon, in the 1980s in response to the Lebanese civil war and the Israeli invasion of 1982. Had ties to Iran, radical Egyptian religious leaders, and Hizb Allah. Goal was to establish an Islamic state through an Islamic revolution according to the Iranian model. Supported reinstatement of the caliphate in Mecca to achieve a broader Muslim unity. Preached individual morality as a basis for social transformation. Led by Shaykh Said Shaban. Greatly weakened after military defeat in October 1985.
